Update Magazine

As Art Director at Ambassador Advertising, I led the redesign and ongoing production of Update, a monthly magazine distributed to more than 1,500 ministry and radio station partners. The publication served as a key relationship-building and storytelling tool, sharing company updates, ministry highlights, partner stories, and industry news across both print and digital formats.

From 2024–2026, I developed and maintained a cohesive editorial system that brought stronger hierarchy, consistency, and visual storytelling to the publication. Working closely with leadership and the marketing team on tight monthly timelines, I managed each issue from layout concept through final print delivery, creating engaging editorial spreads that elevated the publication’s professionalism while supporting clear communication and reader engagement.

Context & Challenge

When I took over production of Update in 2024, the magazine lacked a cohesive editorial system and consistent visual direction. Layouts varied significantly from issue to issue, with weak hierarchy, inconsistent typography, and limited visual storytelling support.

As a monthly publication distributed to over 1,500 ministry and station partners, Update played an important role in maintaining relationships, communicating company updates, and highlighting stories across Ambassador’s partner network. The publication needed a more polished and reliable design system that could improve readability, strengthen visual consistency, and support a fast-paced monthly production schedule.

Within approximately 10 days each month, each edition needed to be designed, reviewed, finalized, proofed, and delivered for print production.

My Role

As Art Director, I led the magazine’s visual direction and managed the publication from editorial layout through final production delivery while collaborating closely with leadership and marketing stakeholders.

Responsibilities included:

  • Designing full 8–12 page magazine layouts each month

  • Creating cover designs and editorial spread systems

  • Establishing consistent typography and visual hierarchy

  • Sourcing supporting photography and visual assets through Getty Images

  • Editing and optimizing imagery for print reproduction

  • Collaborating directly with leadership on editorial structure and content flow

  • Preparing print-ready production files

  • Coordinating directly with printers and approving final proofs

  • Managing both print and digital PDF versions of each issue

Using primarily Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, I developed a scalable editorial design system that improved both the visual quality and production consistency of the publication.

Design Approach & Deliverables

The redesign focused on creating a cleaner, more engaging editorial experience while respecting the company’s established identity and long-standing audience relationships.

The design approach emphasized:

  • Clear editorial hierarchy and readability

  • Consistent pacing and visual structure across issues

  • Strategic use of photography to support storytelling

  • Balanced layouts that guided readers naturally through content

  • Professional print production standards

  • Modernized visuals that still respected the company’s legacy and audience

Deliverables included:

  • Monthly 8–12 page magazine designs

  • Cover concepts and feature layouts

  • Editorial typography and layout systems

  • Stock photo sourcing and image editing

  • Print-ready production files

  • Digital PDF distribution versions

  • Printer coordination and proof approvals

Outcome

The redesigned publication significantly improved the consistency, professionalism, and visual engagement of Update. Leadership expressed strong confidence in the new direction, noting that the redesigned system streamlined the production process and reduced the need for heavy creative oversight each month.

Partners regularly responded positively to the publication’s updated look and storytelling approach, with many commenting on the quality and professionalism of individual editions. The stronger editorial system also improved month-to-month production consistency, helping establish a more reliable and polished publication schedule.

Across 2025, I designed and produced a full year of monthly editions that demonstrated strong editorial consistency, visual storytelling, and scalable production management under recurring deadlines.
